Pre-Reading Material:
Harold, who proposed the topic for this week’s cafe has shared the following pre-reading material.
The German philosophers Martin Heidegger and his teacher Edmund Husserl were contemporaries of Krishnamurti. It seems to me that there is a similarity of thought amongst the three men.
Words from Heidegger:
- The philosophy called phenomenology was defined by Heidegger as “the science of consciousness and its objects”.
- The phenomenological reduction helps us to free ourselves from prejudices and secure the purity of our detachment as observers, so that we can encounter “things as they are in themselves” independently of any presuppositions. The goal of phenomenology for Husserl is then a descriptive, detached analysis of consciousness, in which objects, as it correlates, are constituted.
- Attention to many different modes in which we exist and encounter things
- Language is the vehicle to explain “being”
- What is the mode of being, of that being in which the world constitutes itself?
Words from, or about, Husserl:
- Husserl saw phenomenology as study of the deep structure of all knowing
- He does not presuppose a subject object split
- Offers an alternative to mind-body dualism
- He takes over words used differently in other contexts and expects the reader to understand these words, not in terms of linguistic definitions set forth in advance, but in light of their referents.
- The Husserlian tradition is not merely a tradition of texts to comment upon or argue against, but a permanent possibility of checking descriptive claims against the touchstone of the appropriate experimental evidence so as to confirm or correct such claims.
Words from Krishnamurti:
- Right decision without reference to the past
- The observer and the observed are one

What is the purpose of THE GLOBALITÉ CAFÉ? To have a dialogue on global topics in a quest for the Truth of the matter. To allow solutions to emerge (if they do) from that position of clarity. To experiment with Truth.
What is the nature of the dialogue? There is no leader or moderator. You may submit topics for discussion by sending an email to admin@globalizm.org. Topics will be put up for a vote before or at the start of the dialogue. We may go through more than one topic if the group so wishes.
Some Suggestions on the Nature of Dialogue from the Krishnamurti Foundation of America: * Dialogue starts from a willingness to be tentative about what you know * The focus of dialogue is on what is rather than on ideas and opinions * You can participate by verbally or silently sharing perceptions * Dialogue is letting the issue unfold in affection and mutual respect * When a reaction arises, neither suppress it nor defend it, but suspend it in the mind and in the group, keeping it constantly available for observation and questioning * Dialogue is being together and seeing together in an unfolding relationship
What is the difference between a dialogue and a discussion/debate?

Why participate?
* To go beyond opinions, biases, judgment, theories, and learn to look at what is. While the topics hover around global issues, the process of dialogue tends to be about raising our own awareness. And awareness in turn often leads to conscious evolution, towards collective excellence of humanity * While the dialogue will not start out with a set goal, if solutions emerge organically, we shall strive to take them forward and implement them in tangible ways
