GREAT SOUTHERN RAIL OF AUSTRALIA – THE GHAN

Ever been on a cross country train trip?  That is exactly what #globalite Vane did when she visited Australia.  What sights did she see?!!  #travelthursday #trainjourneys

The Ghan is the ultimate adventure through the heart of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide (1851 miles) without the hassle of driving and hotels. It pulls 29 cars and takes two and a half days to complete the trip one way. The Ghan offers dinning, relaxing accommodation (three different levels of service) and off train excursions at two iconic outback destinations – Alice Springs and Katherine. You also have the option to drive one way and then load the vehicle in the last car of the train for the other way.

We boarded The Ghan in Darwin, which is the capital city of Northern Territory. Also, the largest in Northern Territory.

First stop is the Katherine. We did the Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise tour located in Nitmuilk National Park. These gorges were carved over a billion years by the Katherine river. The gorge walls and white sandy beaches can be explored on foot or by cruise. Well, we saw a crocodile in the river and they do rest on the white sandy beaches along with humans 🙂

Second stop is the Alice Springs. We did the Alice springs Desert Park tour. We saw a spectacular free flight bird show and then a back stage pass to get close and personal with the birds and trainers.

After two and a half days we reached Adelaide, which is the capital city of Southern Australia.

Australia has six states – New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia – and two mainland territories – Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.
